On February 7, 2009 250 people in Washington Heights put the “3 R’s”–Reduce, Reuse and Recycle—into practice at the first neighborhood Stop N’ Swap, a new initiative of GrowNYC’s Office of Recycling Outreach and Education (OROE).
Community swaps provide the opportunity for residents to reduce waste by giving away unwanted possessions. While
neither giving nor taking is required at a swap, residents left happily with new baby
items, ipods, antique typewriters and more or simply reveled in watching their items get swept off to their second lives.
Thanks to the Manhattan Borough President’s Office and the BP’s Go Green Washington Heights and Inwood Initiative, the The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center and of course OROE’s wonderful team of volunteers for making this event a success!
