This garden was created in 1978 by former VISTA volunteer Olean For inan effort to unite her block against heavy drug trafficking in herneighborhood. Olean turned around the lives of many youth with her Boysand Girls club. The first Plant-A-Lot (PAL) site to open in 1979 withLiz Christy and Mayor Ed Koch planting a ceremonial rose bush to growover the garden gate, is now a Manhattan Land Trust community garden.With a generous grant from Evan Frankel Foundation, PAL completed agarden renovation in 2003. Original garden elements were restoredincluding, the stage-seating area, open plaza, bbq patio, tool shed,and pathways with new brick pavers. A new mural and gazebo were added.Ms. For passed away in May, 2004. She truly succeeded in creating anenvironment for All People to enjoy nature and be closer to God.
