United Community Centers Garden

Two-thirds of the East New York community is under the age of 18. As a member of East New York Farms, UCC provides a pastime for the huge youth population in the neighborhood. Every year, twenty interns are selected to be a part of this youth program. Debra, a leader of this program, teaches the interns how to maintain the garden and helps sell its produce at the local Farmer’s Market. This huge garden has its own honey bee hives, compost pile, greenhouse, and rain water harvesting system. The 1100 gallon rain water tank collects from 2 buildings, which add up to 1800 square feet of roof. Because the garden is so far from the roofs’ downspouts, over 50 feet of piping is used to direct rainwater into this tank. There are two separate roof washers, one for each roof.
