First Quincy

First Quincy

The 1000 gallon tank at First Quincy collects from an 1800 square foot roof of a neighboring house. In the 80’s, First Quincy was a community garden run by senior citizens. As the elderly passed, the young neglected to maintain the garden, turning it into an abandoned lot. The idea that a garden should bring together people and resources inspired Herbert Tibbs to turn the abandoned garden into something more. It officially became a Green Thumb Garden on March 31st, 2001. First Quincy flourished into a community garden that includes a gazebo and wall murals. The twelve black FDNY firefighters who died in the 9/11 rescue mission are honored here with a hook and ladder memorial.
