Hollenback Community Garden

Charlie, a gardener at Hollenback, puts food scraps and human waste to good use by turning it into compost for plants. With the help of neighbors and the local Greenmarket, he collects over 1000 pounds of waste each week. The waste is separated into three piles, each differing by the length of time it has had to decompose. The first pile consists of waste that has been sitting for 1 month. The second pile has sat for 3 months and the final pile has sat for 6 months. A compost toilet was a welcome addition to the garden. However, to keep the fumes away from the neighboring patio, the toilet could only be placed in one location, the area where the rain barrel stood. This 750 gallon tank was moved 20 feet away from its original location. Before the tank was built, a neighbor would experience flooding in his basement during heavy rains. After it was installed, he noticed that the flooding stopped. He even requested the gardeners to continue collecting during the winter. It collects from a 1400 square foot roof of an adjacent building.
