Heckscher Foundation Children's Garden

The rain water harvesting system at Heckscher is unique. Unlike many of the other tanks found in NYC’s community gardens, this 200 gallon tank is made out of fiberglass instead of polyethylene. Another distinct feature is that this tank is located inside the 378 square foot shed from which it collects rain water. The downspout reroutes the water to the inside of the shed. The spigot is on the outside of the shed for convenience. This shed has 2 openings on its side wall, one for the inflow and the other for the spigot. Blanca, a gardener at Hecksher, helps maintains the large variety of fruits and vegetables here.
