Annual paper boat races are held during the fall when this 1000 gallon tank is emptied in preparation for the winter. It collects rain water from a 1000 square foot roof of a nearby church. The overflow pipe forms a small water course that ultimately leads to a rain garden. The system on Carlton Avenue is unique because it uses a specialized plastic ball as its roof washer. When water enters the pipe in which the ball is hung, some of it flows into the ball and some of it flows into the drain. A screened region on top of the plastic ball controls the amount of water that enters. As more water flow into the ball, it will get heavier and eventually lower itself and block the pipe. Once it is blocked, water can start filling up the pipe and enter the tank. The ball will automatically drain itself and be set for the next rainfall.
