The best way to control both annual and perennial weeds in the summer time is to pull the root system out of the ground completely. This can be accomplished by hand or by using a variety of garden tools such as hoes, cultivators and trowels in addition to hand-held weeders. All these tools can be found at the local garden center. Once the roots have been pulled, a mulch can be put down on top of the soil where the weeds were to prevent future weeds from emerging. Another non-toxic cultural control to prevent weeds is to remove seed heads of other flowering weeds in the area such as dandelions, crabgrass, and foxtails.
In general mulching is not required; however, in areas where severe winters can be expected a mulch of three to six inches should be applied after the ground freezes. Any type of mulch can be used; buckwheat hulls, salt hay, straw, leaves and such.
