CENYC and Whole Foods Market Build Community Garden in Lower Manhattan with 5% Day on April 19th; Miracle Garden re-opens on Earth Day, April 22, with free activities and community garden party.
Shoppers who visit any of the Whole Foods Market store locations in Manhattan on Wednesday, April 19th will have 5% of their total purchase donated to the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC) to help renovate the 23-year-old community oasis Miracle Garden, located at 194-196 East 3rd Street (between Avenues A & B) in Manhattan. The Whole Foods Market donation will underwrite renovations at the site that include installation of new benches, picnic tables, pathways, mulch, a rehabbed stage area, assorted flowering plant materials, tree pruning and fence repair.
CENYC staff and community gardeners will be on hand from 11:00am – 2:00pm and 5:00pm – 8:00pm at each of the three Manhattan Whole Foods stores: 10 Columbus Circle at the Time Warner Center; 250 Seventh Avenue at 24th Street; and 4 Union Square South. Store hours are 8:00am – 10:00pm. Visitors to the CENYC table will receive an Earth Day Passport with a map and directions to four East Village community gardens including Miracle Garden.
Bearers of the Earth Day Passport who visit 3 of the 4 gardens on Saturday April 22nd and have their Passport stamped at each site shall receive a gift bag at the Miracle Garden during the Tasting Event from 2:30 pm – 5:00pm. The garden will also feature local musicians and refreshments. Each of the four Lower East Side community gardens will host Earth Day events including cooking demonstrations, craft projects and refreshments.
A privately funded citizens group, the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC) was formed in 1970 to promote environmental awareness among New Yorkers and solutions to environmental problems. CENYC contributes to the vitality of NYC’s diverse communities, touching the five boroughs and the lives of many thousands of New Yorkers through three programs: Greenmarket farmers markets, Environmental Education, in intermediate and high schools, and the Open Space Greening Program, which helps create and assist community gardens.
