She has worked with Slow Food USA, The James Beard Foundation, and the Edible Communities magazine series, and hopes that working with Greenmarket will give her some stellar story ideas. Jamie consistently gravitates toward the smelliest foods at the market, like spring garlic, onions, and runny cheese.

Safiya has always loved farmers markets, and makes it a point to discover a market wherever she may find herself stationed in the world. Though this city dweller has absolutely no farming background, her eating background is quite extensive. She can’t wait for plums! Her time in the food service industry and shopping the markets looking for the tastiest vittles has prepared her for a season promoting local eating in her East Harlem/Upper East Side community. The infamous ditty once piped that “Everybody Eats,” and farmers markets are sacred little pockets of humanity that come together for sustenance. The tradition of markets is strong all around the world and across all cultures, and seeing it culminate in the richness of New York City is truly inspiring for Safiya.

The Tribeca Greenmarket provides farm fresh local foods to Tribeca’s movers, shakers, loft dwellers and youngsters.   Neighbors come to meet and greet the folks behind their food, like Alex Villani of Blue Moon Fish, who greets regulars with “the freshest fish in New York City,” according to the New York Times, and Pam Clarke Torres, an 8th generation farmer from Prospect Hill Orchards.  It’s all truly local – from market classics like crisp greens and vegetables, orchard fruit and berries, certified organic offerings, dozens of herbs, live plants, and cut flowers – to special finds like farmstead sheep’s milk cheese, turkey sausage, and the best jelly doughnuts in the tri-state area.  Cooking demonstrations, raffles, and educational activities make the market a hands-on experience for all ages.

Follow us at Union Square

The world-famous Union Square Greenmarket is our flagship market. What began with just a few farmers in 1976 has grown exponentially over the past 33 years, transforming this once dangerous, crime-ridden area and into a dynamic and vibrant public space.

The Union Square Greenmarket currently operates on approximately 2 acres of parkland and hosts over 140 Producers each week: these two acres of market have directly preserved over 12,500 acres of regional farmland.

Blogroll

As our biggest market, the seasonal bounty is unparalleled with hundreds of varieties to choose from during any given season. From just-picked fresh fruits and vegetables, to heritage meats and award-winning farmstead cheeses, artisan breads, jams, pickles, a profusion of cut flowers and plants, wine, ciders, maple syrup and much more.

Located in one of  New York City’s great public spaces, Union Square is a wonderful place for people watching too – catch local chefs from the city’s top restaurants shopping early in the morning for the freshest ingredients; take some time to chat with your local farmer and learn about their growing practices; taste what's cooking during one of our many cooking demos; and don't be surprised if you rub shoulders with the odd celebrity as you reach for those garlic scapes!
