Bringing Healthy Locally Grown Farm Fresh Foods To Our Communities

Healthy Farms—Healthy Communities Growing Together

Making high quality locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables accessible to more New Yorkers, teaching youth business development skills and social enterprise, while supporting local family farmers is the goal of Youthmarkets.

The project is a collaborative effort between CENYC's Greenmarket Program and its community partners. CENYC provides the training, equipment, management and coordinates product supply. Our community partners select the youth, decide on locations, assist training and provide community support.

Seeding Success and Harvesting the Rewards

There are currently four Youthmarkets. Two are based in schools where parents, teachers and volunteers assist the children (mostly ages 10—14). Two markets are managed by High School and College students from the communities they serve. Each group participates in a program of nutritional education, business development, management, marketing and retail operations. Older students serve as mentors, assisting new markets. The training incorporates classroom lessons with hands on experience at markets and visits to farms.

Regardless of their age each student becomes more knowledgeable, gains a unique perspective on business, food and farming and is soon a passionate advocate for good nutrition, fresh produce and local farms to their friends, families, communities and schools. Farmers are helping seed the change and we all harvest the rewards.
