CENYC's Waste Prevention and Recycling Service (WPRS) closed in Fall 2003, after 22 years of groundbreaking work.
WPRS' final year was a banner one: staff worked with NYC public schools and Housing Authority developments to create and implement initiatives that prevented over 375 tons of waste from entering the waste stream. WPRS accomplished so much during its tenure -- installing 1000 recycling programs and over 35 programs for waste prevention in the work place and schools.
WPRS was a waste prevention pioneer, and we remain convinced that waste prevention will be common practice in the near future. The big picture supports this view: recycling is the law in NYC; waste prevention is mandated for NYC Agencies and is currently being written into the City's Solid Waste Management Plan.
Prevention Strategies for the Bottom Line. We worked with INFORM (a NYC-based environmental research and publishing organization) to produceĀ a report on waste prevention strategies that can be implemented by a range of institutions. Case studies accompany the strategies which enable companies and government agencies to bring down their disposal, purchasing and operating costs while reducing waste.
