Located outside the entrance of historic Fort Greene Park and surrounded by chestnut trees and centuries-old brownstones, the bustling Fort Greene market serves a diverse community of young, urban professionals and multi-generational families who gather every Saturday, year round, to mingle and shop for everything from Conuco Farm’s no-spray micro greens to Glebocki Farm’s affordable staples like potatoes, onions and vegetables grown in Orange County’s famous black-dirt region to Cato Corner's delicious cheese (including their famous Womanchego!) and Pura Vida’s fresh fish. Be prepared to spot Nick Morgenstern from The General Greene shopping for fresh-picked apples from Wilklow Orchards for his impossibly flaky apple pie, and Catherine Saillard from iCi whose farm-to-table menu is inspired by seasonal ingredients.
You can shop for everything you need at this market, eat at one of the well-known farm-to-table restaurants in the neighborhood and go to nearby Brooklyn Flea (open on Saturdays in the Bishop Loughlin High School parking lot.)

| Justin Erkess, a Philadelphia native, never toiled in the soil as a young lad. He got interested in food production when he moved to Central New York and could see agricultural land from his bedroom window. After exposure to the vibrant organic food movements in Ithaca and then later Eugene, Oregon, he was hooked, and went on to spend the 2007 and 2008 growing seasons on a small organic farm in northern Vermont. Currently residing in Brooklyn, his experience brings valuable teaching points to the Greenmarket information tent, enriching people's awareness of the interconnectedness of food, environment, and health. Henrietta Koffi, originally from the Bronx, went to high school in Massachusetts, college in Virginia and traveled as far as Mankato, Minnesota in the middle of winter – an experience she never wants to repeat- as a yearbook photographer. During the week she teaches computers and the internet to job seekers, and also does some grant writing for the Fort Greene SNAP. Henrietta has found that standing in the middle of a vibrant Greenmarket early on a sunny Saturday morning just makes her very, very happy. |
