Picking Apples

When is the last time that you saw your favorite celebrity eating an apple? Students in the LGE program took a crash course in media literacy as a way to spread the word about healthy eating. The idea -- come up with a fun, catchy visual image to promote fresh fruits and vegetables.

Why an apple? Because they are crunchy, sweet, tart, loaded with vitamins and nutrients, and available fresh year-round from your local GreenMarket.

Apple Facts:

  • Apples are fat, sodium, and cholesterol free.

  • A medium sized apple has about 80 calories.

  • Apples are a great source of the fiber pectin. One apple has five grams of fiber.

  • Apples are a good source of vitamins especially vitamin C

  • 2500 varieties of apples are grown in the United States.

  • New York State is the 2nd largest grower of apples in the US

Fruits and vegetables can help keep you healthy and reduce your risk of: cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
