CENYCs Environmental Education green citizenship effort motivated 930 high school and intermediate students in 22 projects in four boroughs and the Catskill Watershed. Youths planted 900 trees and shrubs along the Hudson and Bronx Rivers, Long Island Sound and Batavia Kill tributary to the Schoharie Reservoir. 150 high school teens in Morrisannia learned the benefits of locally grown foods and cared for two vegetable gardens.
TSO youth surveyed over 100 blocks in the Bronx and Manhattan, reporting need of repair to city agencies. The city is planning to fix fire hydrants and catch basins, clean litter and plant trees where needed. In addition, nearly 300 teens did alternative energy projects, e.g. solar ovens and solar houses, to study energy and educate schoolmates.
